Psychiatry Services
Psychiatry focuses on diagnosing, treating and preventing mental, emotional and behavioral disorders.
There are different types of psychiatric providers. This includes medical doctors (M.D. or D.O.) and advanced practice providers (P.M.H.N.P. or P.A.) who specialize in mental health or substance use disorders. They assess both the mental and physical aspects of psychological problems.
People seek psychiatric help for many reasons. Problems can be sudden, such as panic attacks, hallucinations, thoughts of suicide, or hearing "voices." Or they may be longer-term, such as feelings of sadness, hopelessness, or anxiousness. These problems can interfere with your function or cause everyday life to feel distorted or out of control.
Your condition and severity will determine how often you need outpatient psychiatry visits. We schedule new patient appointments for one hour and follow-up visits for 30 minutes.
At your first appointment, your provider will ask questions to better understand you, your history and your challenges. They will explain your diagnoses and treatment plan. They may recommend psychotherapy, medication management, further testing or partial hospitalization. They may also refer you to a specialist to address underlying concerns. (For example, if sleep seems to be a factor, they may refer you to a sleep medicine provider.)
Within our clinic, we view the patient in the context of their life. We take into account stressors such as finances, housing, or transportation that may be impacting your mental health. Our team works with others outside of your appointment to meet needs such as:
- Getting specialty medications
- Qualifying for medication discounts
- Coordinating with inpatient units if you need to go into the hospital
- Transferring you to a higher level of care, such as a partial hospitalization program, if needed
- Working with schools and attending IEP meetings when able
- Offering Behavioral Health Home program services as a paid benefit through Medicaid
- Coordinating with agencies like Community Mental Health, therapy offices, psychological testing agencies, etc.
- Offering nurse given injectable medications such as Invega and Abilify
Telehealth
Telehealth can improve access to care by reducing travel and addressing other obstacles to in-person visits. It can also help alleviate some of the stressors associated with mental health issues. Depending on your circumstances and needs, a virtual video or phone appointment may be right for you.
Fees & Insurance
We accept most major health insurances, including Medicare and Medicaid. Please bring your insurance card to every visit. We expect payment at the time of the visit for deductibles, co-pays, and office services that are not covered by insurance.
